Blackbrook is a series that was created near a Trappist monastery in England after 2 weeks of meditation by a lake. Algae floating in the water, seeds floating on the water slowly move continuously. Normally, Markus Bollen checks the screen down to the corners of the picture. Which sheet should still be visible at the edge of the picture. He positions every detail by adjusting the camera and lens with millimeter precision. With this series, however, he had to relinquish the last bit of control, because during the time when the screen was switched to the film magazine, the motif continued to move on the water. Through the reflections of the sky and the surrounding trees, through the structures of the scattered seeds and leaves, almost abstract reproductions of nature have emerged. Some viewers associate images from the night sky, like a Milky Way. Of course, if you look behind the facade, you have to ask why so many algae are swimming in the lake? Are they a sign of over-fertilization of agricultural land whose groundwater flows into the lake?
This series is dedicated to Duane Michels.
God really dwells in this place, and I didn't know it, Jacob once said. So you too seek God, dear soul, and yet he is everywhere. Everything announces it to you. Everything gives it to you. He went to your side, he surrounded you, he penetrated you and stayed in you - yes he remains in you: and you were looking for him! You strove for an idea of God and essentially possessed Him! You pursue perfection as it lies in everything that comes your way unsought. God himself confronts you in the form of your suffering, your actions, the impulses that you receive. In the meantime you are struggling in vain for sublime ideas with which he does not want to clothe himself in order to take up residence with you. P. de Caussade (Book II, chap. 3, § 5 pp. 160-161.)
